Brazil and U.S. come together to promote global animal science

Scientists from the Brazilian Society of Animal Science (SBZ) and the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) have officially agreed to share speakers and programming. This “memorandum of understanding” comes after years of informal speaker exchanges and collaboration between the two societies.

“Our two societies promote global animal sciences and have a long history together of training students and participation in meetings. This formal partnership will leverage the memberships and resources of our societies to further our combined interests in animal science education, research, service and the greater animal industry,” said Dr. James Sartin, president of ASAS. “I am very excited at the prospects for future professional interactions with the members of SBZ.”

The societies aim to support forums on global animal science and production during their respective annual meetings. With this official agreement, ASAS will provide support for four to eight speakers chosen by SBZ to present at the SBZ meetings. The SBZ will likewise provide support for four to eight speakers chosen by ASAS to present at the Joint Annual Meeting. During the SBZ and ASAS annual meetings, the societies will create attractive programming for individuals interested in animal science and production disciplines.

A global focus on animal agriculture is increasingly important as countries like Brazil and the United States work to improve animal health and food safety during global trade. Brazil and the United States also have a history of exchanging animal science graduate students and supporting international research programs. The two societies also publish leading animal science journals: the Brazilian Journal of Animal Science and the Journal of Animal Science.

“The partnership between ASAS and SBZ will be of paramount importance to bring research groups together in the area of animal sciences, as well as to foster the creation and dissemination of knowledge to farmers throughout the world,” added members of the SBZ advisory council and SBZ board of directors.
