O milho hidropônico é ideal para alimentação de caprinos de corte e de leite. Independente das condições climáticas e com pouco gasto de água, o sistema apresenta alta produtividade no cultivo de forrageiras, variando de 25 a 30 quilos por metro quadrado, o equivalente a 6.840 toneladas por hectare por ano. Em um ciclo de 15 dias do plantio à colheita, a forragem atinge altura média de 25 a 28 centímetros com ótima concentração de nutrientes. Sempre é bom colocar 10% a mais para compensar alguma perda, porém 25 quilos de sementes de milho são suficientes para semear 10 metros quadrados, cujo rendimento chega a 193 quilos de forragem. Como complemento, acrescente 7 quilos de farelo de soja, somando 200 quilos para alimentar cerca de 165 animais, para um consumo diário por cabeça de 1,2 quilo. Em um cálculo de regra de três, sacos de 50 quilos de sementes alimentam 330 caprinos.
Para cultivar milho hidropônico, coloque as sementes de molho na água por 24 horas para facilitar a germinação. Demarque, limpe e forre a área com uma lona dupla face, com a parte preta voltada para baixo. Espalhe um substrato feito de bagaço de cana hidrolisado, palha de arroz ou feno picotado, até formar uma camada de 10 centímetros. Em seguida, aplique a solução nutritiva composta de supersimples e calcário calcítico, distribuindo sobre a área as sementes de milho e cobrindo-as com 5 centímetros de substrato.
